Grant Overview
Addressing Leadership Gaps Among Indigenous Youth in Oregon
Oregon’s Indigenous communities face a significant gap in cultural representation, particularly in leadership roles across various sectors. With nearly 35,000 residents identifying as Native American, many young people in these communities lack access to mentorship and guidance that can foster their leadership capabilities. The disconnect between traditional knowledge and contemporary decision-making spaces has created challenges that inhibit effective advocacy and community empowerment.
Youth Leadership Development Program
The Cultural Leadership Development Program in Oregon is designed to equip Indigenous youth with the skills necessary for effective cultural advocacy and preservation. This program focuses on creating a pipeline of emerging leaders who can influence systemic changes and advocate for their communities within broader socio-political contexts. Participants will engage in mentorship opportunities that connect them with established leaders in their communities, thereby creating a supportive network for growth.
Mentorship and Training
Each participant in the program will undergo a series of training modules that emphasize cultural advocacy, strategic communication, and community engagement. This approach ensures that youth not only learn foundational leadership skills but also understand the importance of their cultural identity in their leadership journey. Mentorship from Indigenous elders will be paramount, allowing younger generations to learn from the experiences and wisdom of those who came before them.
Cultivating the Next Generation of Stewards
The Cultural Leadership Development Program seeks to promote a new generation of cultural stewards in Oregon. By investing in youth leadership, the initiative aims to create lasting impacts that extend far beyond the participants themselves. As these emerging leaders begin to engage actively in decision-making processes, they will help to ensure that Indigenous voices are represented and amplified, fostering a more inclusive future for Oregon’s diverse communities.
