Grant Overview
Mobile Business Advising for Rural Women in Oregon
Oregon's rural areas present distinct challenges for women entrepreneurs, particularly in accessing vital business consulting services. Research indicates that women in rural communities face significant barriers to entrepreneurship, including limited access to infrastructure and resources. In 2022, it was reported that women-owned businesses accounted for only 18% of total businesses in Oregon's rural counties, compared to 31% in urban areas, highlighting a concerning gap that this grant aims to address.
The barriers women face in Oregon's rural settings include a lack of physical proximity to business advisors and limited internet connectivity, which hampers their ability to access online consulting services. Additionally, many women entrepreneurs in these areas come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and lack access to traditional funding sources. Without adequate support, many aspiring women entrepreneurs struggle to obtain essential business knowledge and networking opportunities required to establish sustainable enterprises.
This grant will fund a mobile advising unit specifically designed to bridge this geographic divide. By bringing tailored business strategies, financial planning resources, and market analysis directly to underserved communities, the initiative aims to empower women entrepreneurs. The mobile unit will travel to various rural locations, providing individualized consulting services and connecting women with local resources.
By addressing the specific barriers associated with rural entrepreneurship, this program will ultimately aim to increase the number of sustainable female-led businesses across Oregon's 36 counties. The initiative will not only enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem in rural areas but will also contribute to economic diversification. By providing localized support and resources, women entrepreneurs can more effectively navigate the unique challenges of their environments and thrive in the marketplace.
